Linden Tree                              American Elm

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2022

Year nine of the Town of Castor tree program.

This year the removal of trees is on 50th Street between 54th and 55th Avenue, and along 54th Avenue between 49th and 50th Street.

We will be grinding a total of 28 stumps this year along the East side of 50th Street and between 53rd and 54th Avenue, in front of Manor 2, on the side of Manor 1 and at the cemetery.

We will be planting Green Ash along 48th Street and Linden on 50th Street.  We ordered some Columnar Aspen last fall in hopes of getting ahead of the supply issues at the nurseries that are needing to be replaced.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2021

Year eight of the Town of Castor tree program.

This year the removal of trees is on 50th Street from 53rd Avenue to 54th Avenue on the boulevard on the east side of the street. As well there is a couple trees to be removed on 50th Street between 50th Avenue and 51st Avenue.  There are approximately 15 trees in total to be removed with majority of the trees being poplar trees.

We will be doing stump removal of the trees that were removed last year, that being the two blocks on 50th Street between 51st Avenue and 53rd Avenue on the east side of the street. There were approximately 15 per block to be ground.  There is a couple stumps in Pals Park that needs ground as well as a dozen other stumps throughout town where a dead tree was removed in late fall of 2020. These would be ground if there is enough in the budget.

Planting this year will be on the west side of 50th Street between 53rd Avenue and 54th Avenue with the Lindens as we have already been doing all along 50th Street. Another area for planting is the north side of 54th Avenue east of 51st Street (Beach hill road) with plans of planting spruce trees. Also on the planting list this year is on the east side 48th Street between 52nd Avenue and 54th Avenue.  We had planned to plant it last year with Green Ash but was unable to get any of those trees due to a shortage in the spring.  We will also plan to order a couple more Columnar Aspen to replace some that hadn’t survived.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2020

Year seven of the Town of Castor tree program.

This year the removal of trees is on 50th Street from 51st Avenue to 53rd Avenue on the boulevard on the east side. This covers our two blocks for the year.  There are approximately 15 trees on each block with the majority of the trees being poplar trees.  On the plus side, this will remove roughly 22 of the fuzz producing trees.

We will be doing stump removal on the trees that were removed last year, that being one block on 50th Street between 53rd Avenue and 54th Avenue on the west side of the street and on 54th Avenue east of 51st Street along the north side.  There are also a couple stumps in Pals Park that can be added to the list.

Planting for this year will be on the east side of 48th Street between 52nd Avenue and 54th Avenue with Manchurian Ash or Patmore Green Ash.  We will also continue planting the Columnar Aspen on 49th Avenue between 51st Street and 52nd Street. We will also try to replace any trees that were damaged or died over the winter in the past couple years with new ones.  A couple more fruit trees are planning to be add to the fruit orchard.

Town of Castor  - Tree Program - 2019

Year six of the Town of Castor tree program.

First, there is the removal of the trees in front of the museum on 49th Avenue from 51st Street to 52nd Street. Then there is the removal on the west side of South Street between 53rd Avenue and 54th Avenue. Also, some removal on north side of 54th Avenue east of 1st Street.

Secondly, we will do stump removal of the trees that were removed last year; this being the stumps (11 stumps) on 54th Street on the east side from 52nd Avenue to 54th Avenue. From here there are three stumps by Vision Credit Union on 50th Street between 50th Avenue and 49th Avenue, and by the swimming pool on 50th Street, there are another four to remove. There is also one at the museum from the tree that was removed last year because it was interfering with construction. This year we are looking at a couple of local businesses that are offering stump grinding or have equipment available to rent.

Finally, planting this year will be on 49th Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Street on the boulevard by the UFA lot, continuing with the Columnar Aspen. The planning on the 51st Street project has put us a bit ahead of schedule, so we are looking at taking this opportunity to replace a few of the trees that have been damaged or died from the previous years. There are some Dropmore Lindens on 50th Street, Amur Maple by the Elevator museum and a couple along 51st Street, and then some fruit trees in the orchard at the end of 50th Street.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2018

Year five of the Town of Castor tree program.

Again this year will see extra trees replaced thanks to the infrastructure project along 51st Street.

In 2017 an additional 50-60 trees were removed from the boulevards along 51st Street. The roots were also removed in 2017. Approximately 50 Amur Maple trees will be placed on both boulevards along 51st Street from 54th Avenue to 56th Avenue.

The Town will replace one block of Columnar Aspen along 49th Avenue, in keeping with removals from last year; plus one block along 54th Avenue from 48th Street to 49th Street (south side) will be planted with 6 Amur Maples.

11 of the Linden Trees along 50th Street were damaged in the October 2017 storm. Although they will likely make a comeback, it was suggested that they would no longer be of "boulevard quality" so they will be transplanted in a less conspicuous place and new Lindens planted.

The tree budget for this work was absorbed by the infrastructure project.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2017

Year four of the Town of Castor tree program.

This year saw extra trees replaced thanks to the infrastructure project along 51st Street.

During the last few months of 2016 and spring of 2017, over 50 trees were removed from the boulevards along 51st Street. It became necessary when we discovered that root damage would be imminent when the streets were dug up to replace the infrastructure. Approximately 50 Amur Maple trees were placed on both boulevards along 51st Street from 51st Avenue to 54th Avenue.

The Town also replaced two blocks of Clumnar Aspen along 49th Avenue, in keeping with removals from last year.

The tree budget for this work was absorbed by the infrastructure project.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2016

Year three for the Town of Castor tree program.

First, we have removed trees on two boulevards - 49th Avenue from 50th Street to 51st Street and along 54th Avenue from 48th Street to 49th Street.

Secondly, we will remove stumps in areas that we removed trees last year, plus any other stumps on boulevards around town (could be as many as 40 stumps). This should catch us up on stump removal.

Finally, we will dig out a reasonable amount of old soil and replace it with a good quality of black loam and plant trees that are approximately 6'-7' tall. Each boulevard will have approximately 7 trees, about 25' to 30' apart. This is less than the amount of trees originally on each boulevard.

Boulevards to be planted are:

1. West side of 50th Street from 52nd Avenue to 53rd Avenue. Will place Linden trees.

2. North side of 49th Avenue from 48th Street to 49th Street. Will place Columnar Aspen trees. Columnar Aspen trees will be added to the north side of Home Hardware to fill in where others have died. We will purchase 6' spruce to place along the north boulevard on West Park Drive where bus was removed to move a fence.

The tree budget for this work is approximately $15,000.00. This will allow for unforeseen expenses and includes the machinery costs and the Town Crew's time. We have $5,000.00 from ATCO Electric for the 2015 removals to offset the costs this year.

Town of Castor - Tree Program - 2015

Year two for the Town of Castor tree program.

First, we will remove trees on two boulevards - 49th Avenue from 45th Street to 48th Street and from 49th Street to 50th Street.

Secondly, we will remove stumps in areas that we removed trees last year, plus any other stumps on boulevards around town (could be as many as 40 stumps). This should catch us up on stump removal.

Boulevards to be planted are:

1. West side of 50th Street from 51st Avenue to 52nd Avenue. Will place Linden trees.

2. West side of 50th Street from 55th Avenue to 56th Avenue. Will place American Elm trees.

The tree budget for this work is approximately $15,000.00. This will allow for unforeseen expenses and includes the machinery costs and the Town Crew's time.

One more suggestion would be that we dedicate each tree planted, starting with people who served as Town Councillors in the past.
